When shopping for leather goods, you have probably heard the age-old debate: handmade versus machine-made. For years, the industry has pushed the narrative that handmade is the only way to get true quality, while machine-made items are inherently cheap or inferior.

But here is the honest truth: machine-made leather isn't the problem. The material is.

While a machine-stitched item may never have the exact rustic irregularity of a fully hand-saddle-stitched custom piece, a machine-stitched wallet or watch band can be extremely high-quality and incredibly durable—if the right leather is used.

The Real Secret: It’s All About the Grain

A sewing machine is just a tool. If you feed premium, heavy-duty thread and world-class leather through a high-end machine, you are going to get an exceptional product that lasts for years.

At NINE, we use Full-Grain and Top-Grain leathers for our collections. These are the absolute highest tiers of leather available. They contain the strongest, most densely packed fibers of the hide. Because we refuse to compromise on the raw materials, even our precision machine-stitched items offer top-tier durability, a beautiful feel, and a natural patina that gets better with age.

The Dark Side of Machine Production: Copycats and Fake Leather

If machine stitching isn't inherently bad, why does it have a bad reputation? Because machines make it incredibly easy to copy good designs.

When a reputable brand designs a beautiful, functional leather watch band or wallet, other factories instantly copy the design and mass-produce it using automated machines. But to undercut the original creator's price, they have to cut corners on the one thing that matters most: the material.

Instead of using premium Full-Grain or Top-Grain leather, these copycat businesses use:

• PU Leather (Polyurethane): 100% plastic that has been stamped with a fake grain pattern. It peels, cracks, and falls apart in months.
• "Genuine" Leather: This is an industry buzzword. While technically real leather, "genuine leather" is usually the leftover, weakest bottom layers of the hide glued together and painted to look smooth.

 

The Profit Margin Trap

You might be wondering why there is so much fake and low-grade leather flooding the market. The answer is simple: profit margins.

The fake leather industry is highly lucrative. Synthetic PU leather and cheap bonded "genuine" leathers cost pennies to manufacture compared to real, sustainable full-grain hides. Even if a copycat brand sells a fake leather watch band for half the price of ours, their profit margin is actually higher than ours because their material costs are practically zero.

It is a highly attractive business model for shady sellers looking to make a quick buck, but it leaves the customer with a product destined for the trash can.

How to Protect Yourself

We urge our customers to look closely at what they are actually buying. When you are shopping for leather accessories, keep these rules in mind:

1. Check the Terminology: Look specifically for the words "Full-Grain" or "Top-Grain." If a brand just says "Genuine Leather," "Premium PU," or "Vegan Leather" (which is usually just plastic), put it back.
2. The Golden Rule: If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. You cannot buy a highly durable, top-grain leather product for $12. The raw materials simply cost more than that.
